Slovakia: A landlocked country in central Europe with beautiful scenery, hospitable people and more recently one of the focal points for travel and tourism in Europe. The landscape is noted primarily for its mountains, with the Carpathian Mountains extending across most of the country including the high peaks of the Tatra; a popular skiing destination with beautiful lakes and deep valleys. The famous river the Danube runs through Slovakia.

Slovakia has a rich folk tradition with influences from other areas of Europe including Hungary, Czech and the former Yugoslavia. The National Museum located in Bratislava houses exhibits on history, archaeology, and musicology and is a must visit for any tourist interested in the local culture. The native language is "Slovensko" officially “Slovak” similar to and related to Czech and Polish.

The Climate
There are three distinctly different kinds of climate depending on which part of Slovakia you are. There are temperate and continental type climate conditions with relatively warm summers and cold winters.

Holidays
Slovakia in general terms is a safe country to visit although like everywhere in the World a visitor must be sensible and take sensible precautions, especially in the main cities. Visitors must carry passports with them at all times for identification purposes. Slovakia is not about glitz and glamour it’s more about nature and unspoilt villages, folk traditions and hilly countryside. Castles in the hillside are testament to the battles and wars that have been fought over this small country; all adding to its rich culture. The best times to visit are May, June and September. Most locals will take their holidays in July and August so hotels and accommodation are more difficult to find at that time. Of course Bratislava and the mountain ski resorts cater to visitors all year round.

When visiting restaurants and tourists resorts remember that it is expected to tip if the service is good then a 10% is expected. Taxi fares are usually rounded up to the nearest 10.

The international dialling code for Slovakia is +421. The outgoing code is 00 followed by the relevant country code (e.g. 0044 for the UK). Area codes are used, e.g. Bratislava is (0)2. Internet cafes are common in most large towns and Cellular network coverage is good.

Slovakia is a great place to visit with lots of interesting sights and plenty of culture and history.
